hello, I'm due to put out a website and wondered if anyone had any recommendations for hosting? I've put together a simple, single page thing and I already got a domain.
I found www.110mb.com, its free hosting the only downside I can see at the moment is I think you have to have 100mb in your url but I think you can host up to 5 sites with one account and if you already have a domain you can probably use that also and it wont alter the url. I'm not 100% on that because Ive not figured it all out yet but worth a check any road, especially if its free, dont know many crack whores desperate to give it away that cheap!
Like a lot of stuff you get what you pay for up to a point. If you don't need loads of features you can get cheap hosting. If your site uses a database for example you'll need more features.
Cheap hosting packages are all 'shared server' hosting. Ie. lots of sites on one server - nothing wrong with that, but you'll want decent processor speed in the server as it is dealing with lots of other stuff from the other sites. You are also at risk from other sites on the sames servers security errors. What does the host offer if say one site on the server sends out loads of spam and gets the server blacklisted with email companies. That then effects your email 'cos you're on the same server...
If you have a good host they should have measures in place to account for anything like this...
That said if you have a very simple site you don't really need to worry too much.
Before looking at price consider - security, Bandwidth (extra charges can mount up), storage - if you are planning to add lots of nice big images how much will you need. Are you planning to expand your site - will you be tied into a 18 month contract or can you expand/ change...
great! thanks a lot, that is really useful advice. It's quite a simple one page thing that I have at the mo but I may have plans to expand it at some point. cheers
just to update, I went with 'justhost' in the end. I couldn't find anything bad about them on the web and they came top in a couple of toptens and were present in most of them. I even got in on a new year spesh which means its cheap too.
As I said, the website is a simple one for starters but does all I need it too at the mo.
I used to use one.com - But after a year, they don't remind you that your domain is near for renewal, they just bill you, and no way out of it. (Very annoying if you have 2 or 3 domains and then over a year stop using one, as its gonna cost you money!)
For that reason, I don't use them anymore, I think its terrible service to do that with no get-out clause.
