Coach surfing is really good. I know friends who have stayed in Spain, Germany, France moving from place to place.

I've stayed at a little hostel just down the road from Victoria Station called the Astor, and that was a pretty good budget stay. Prices start from £15 per night. Give it a google.

If you are looking for a place for a couple of nights you could find a couch on couchsurfing.com. If you would like to spend a longer time in one place go to http://hostandcare.com which is a community that connects students and travellers looking for free accomodations with families and seniors looking for care. You get free room and board in exchange for few hours a week of helping out. You could do tutoring, child care, senior care, home care, etc.
